Summer time means holidays for children, and what better way than reading to enjoy the holidays. It also is a great way to bond and improve the imagination. A few tips on your book reading session with your child/children:

  1. Story reading can be used to reach across to your child on some of his current issues without actually pinpointing the issue he is facing, for example not brushing, littering around, etc. Series of Bubbles, Pepper, Nini are excellent for the cause. The layout of the book encourages a child’s imagination as it is more pictures and less words which are also in a large font size. Highly recommended to get your child on the way to book addiction.:)
  2. More than magical stories tell your child stories with which he can relate, and see like stories with animal characters, plant characters, sun, moon, stars, etc.
  3. In case you are telling a classic story, for example Goldilocks and the 3 Bears , you can team it up with a tree picture book and introduce your child to more vocabulary ,Suppose it says, “ Goldilocks went to the forest on the way to the forest she saw a lot of trees,” you can add, “ like Gulmohar, Banyan tree, Peepul tree, etc.”Thus this factual information registers in the minds of the young child much faster.
  4. Factual reading is extremely essential. This feeds the child’s curiosity and gives him the much needed answers to his questions. Example The solar system, Parts of the flower/ plant, Digestive system, Wonders of the World.
  5. The ever green stories enjoyed by the children are Aesop’s Tales, Panchatantra, Jataka Tales, Akbar Birbal, Tenali raman, and the Mythological stories from Ramayan, Mahabharata etc.

Story telling is different from Story reading where you involve a lot of drama, voice modulation, expressions , fun. Do tell your child the folktales , probably the ones told by your grandmother in your childhood and many more. Role model stories also instill great aspirations in a child, so include them as well. Example Neil Armstrong, Sachin Tendulkar, Vinoba Bhave, Veer Savarkar, etc.
